Tumble Clothes Dryer Buying Guide

Apr 12 2020

Washer dryers are now more technologically advanced and energy-efficient than before. If you decided to buy a dryer for your home, then the next step is to select the best model. There are different types of dryers available which work on different technologies. We will help you choose the right model for your laundry needs.

Which dryer is right for you?

  1. Frequency to use your clothes dryer?
  2. Space and ventilation in your house?
  3. Is it Cost-effective?

Choosing a right tumble dryer

Vented tumble dryers

Vented tumble dryers take the hot, damp air from drying clothes and expel it outside the house through a plastic hose. The hose can fit into a permanent vent within the wall or just hang through an open window. Cheaper than condenser models, vented tumble dryers need to be installed either next to a window or by an external wall vent.

Condenser tumble dryers

Condenser tumble dryers separate water from the moist air into a container that has got to be removed and emptied regularly, although some models drain the water through a hose into a drainpipe. Although costlier than vented models, condenser dryers may be used anywhere in your house as you don’t get to connect a hose to a vent or window.

Some condenser tumble dryers go along with heat pumps that re-circulate the hot damp air instead of venting it outside the machine. By conserving heat, these energy-efficient tumble dryers can help you save cash on your household bills. By using lower temperatures, they’re gentler on your clothes and are very quiet in use.

Warnings

To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons when using this appliance, follow basic precautions, including the following:

  1. Properly ground the Dryer
  2. Dryer Should be Properly Install
  3. A dryer shouldn't be below exposed to temperature below freezing or exposed to weather
  4. Don’t install the Dryer in dumping Space
  5. Improper power circuit can melt, creating electric shock and/or fire hazard
  6. Dryer Should be installed above 18’’ above the ground
  7. Don’t install near other sources of heat like stove or cooking oven
  8. To avoid dripping wax, smoke or fire ensure to not place any Candles, Smoking material or any flammables on the top of Dryer.
  9. Don’t open the door during a cycle
  10. Don't leave your dryer on while you are not at home.

Some Feature we should look

 Auto program

This claims to automatically detect when the load has dried. Auto programs can take the guesswork out of garments drying by switching your dryer off when it's done, saving energy and preventing the danger of damaging your clothes through over-drying.

In practice, they can be a bit hit and miss depending on the size of the load you're drying.

 Woolens program

This is a low-heat program designed for drying certain wool or wool-blend items of clothing. Remember though that even with a woolens program, not all woolen garments can safely be dried within the dryer - read the garment care tag carefully and ensure it says that it's safe to try to do so.

Delicates program

Like a woolens program, a fragile program may be a gentle, coldness mode for drying delicate fabrics, though even as with wool, read the care instructions on the garment carefully and if it doesn't say it's safe to place during a dryer you must air dry it instead.

According to the Australian standard, clothes dryers must be able to achieve a 6% or better moisture content, and if you're using your dryers' auto program it will turn itself off once it reaches this point. If you've used a dryer with an auto function though you'll have noticed your clothes still feel a little damp. Why does your dryer stop at this point? For several reasons. It makes your clothes easier to iron, it prevents over drying and damaging delicate fabrics, and it improves energy efficiency. Even if you did get your clothes to zero percent moisture content (bone dry, in technical terms) they would rehydrate by absorbing moisture from the air. But if you want your clothes extra dry, say, for sealing them up in a bag for winter, an extra dry function can remove a little bit more moisture. It gives you more flexibility, but isn't necessary for day to day use.

Delay time function

While it isn't a good idea to leave laundry lying around wet for any length of your time, there are many reasons why you may not want to begin your dryer right away. A delay start, or delay time function allows you to line your dryer to start at a particular time, say when everyone's gone to bed to not interrupt family dinner or movie time, to take advantage of peak solar electricity production within the middle of the day, or so that the dryer finishes at a convenient time, so clothes aren't sitting tangled during a heap, which may cause creases to make (though in fact, you must never run a dryer when you're out of the house because of the risk of fires), which brings us to, which can cause creases to form (though of course you should never run a dryer when you're out of the house due to the risk of fires).

Anti-crease function

When activated, anti-crease continues to softly tumble your clothes every so often after drying has finished, so creases don't settle in so readily.

Child lock controls

An excellent option if you have small, inquisitive children. Child lock controls not to start the Dryer unless a particular button combination is pressed - invaluable if you have curious little ones around with access to your laundry.

Saving tips for clothes dryers

  1. Air dries your clothes wherever possible
  2. Keep your lint filter clean
  3. Open a window or use your home's ducting
  4. Be skeptical of dryer balls and other gimmicks

Error Codes

Error and fault codes help you to understand possible causes with the dryer. If the unit is displaying an error, check the chart below for possible error code resolutions:

Common error of LG Dryer:

Error Code Possible Causes Solutions
tE1 or tE2 Temperature sensor failure. Turn off the dryer and call for service.
HS Humidity Sensor failure. Turn off the dryer and call for service.
PS or Pf or nP

Electric dryer power cord is not connected correctly, or house power supply is incorrect.

House fuse is blown, circuit breaker has tripped, or power outage has occurred.

Check the power supply or the connection of power cord to the terminal block.

Do not increase the fuse capacity. If the problem is a circuit overload, have it corrected by a qualified electrician.

Common error of Siemens Dryer:

Error Code Possible Causes Solutions
01 and 17 Water Level Errors These error codes mean there has been a water level error detected in the washing machine, you should check the supply hoses and filters to make sure it’s not a simple block or hose kink.
03 and 18 Drainage Errors These error codes mean your appliance can’t drain properly, this problem again could take numerous forms but will most often be caused by debris blocking the pump or filter
08, 16 and 34 Door Lock Errors If the door latch or catch is damaged or blocked, then that could be causing the problem.
10 Communication Errors This error means your appliance as detected a problem with the internal communication in your machine. This will usually be down to an electrical or wiring problem between your appliances module and motor
06 and 07 Sensor Errors This means there is a problem with the NTC sensor in your appliance this could be because the sensor is defective or due to its connections.
02 Heater Errors This means there’s an issue with the heater in the appliance, checking this will usually require a multi-meter so it’s something best left to a professional.
